Costume Feathers and Boas for Halloween
Sunday, October 10th, 2010I always harp on wearing appropriate accessories with your Halloween costumes. Not to mention the same stuff over and over again, but customers keep buying things that just don’t match! Shame on them. Haha, or shame on me for not making it more clear. Whoever is to blame for these confused costumes, they should be taken to task. Certain costumes need to have specific accessories. The flapper is one of the most common of these garments. Since it is a period costume I do recommend only picking out pieces that, at least, were in existence during the time that the costume actually would have been worn. Feather boas are a classic item that can be worn with the flapper and many other costumes. Popular for evening wear during the twenties the feather boa is an inexpensive solution to kicking your Flapper costume up a notch.
Ostrich feathers are another item that will look good when placed with a flapper. I recommend them for custom hair pieces or modified veils. Now were getting into some serious costume design that may bore some of you, but-darn it-I want you to have a better costume than just the piece of clothing that comes out of the costume box. You deserve better. It’s not that hard…just pick out the costume set you want and research period accessories. If you need help, email me and I will be glad to pick out some items for you. Elvis is a character that will never go out of style. His moves and iconic looks have inspired millions of imitators worldwide; none as good as The King. Elvis changed over his years in the spotlight. From a young and fresh faced boy of the fifties, to a bloated sweaty tabloid star in the seventies. This just makes his character that much more complex. What a troubled; talented man! The world may never know such a pop rock genius. Not to mention movie star. Elvis in the memory of many may be different that the picture many young people have in their minds of him, but either way-any Elvis style-is a costume that is always a hit!
Fat Elvis was a sweaty mess. I’m too young to have seen Elvis in person, but my grandparents tell me of time that they went to see him perform in Las Vegas sometime in the seventies. My grandpa said he looked, “hopped up on dope, all greasy and he forgot some words…” This is just part of the Elvis mystique and a great excuse for getting a touch sloppy on Halloween night.
Remember not all Elvis Halloween costumes have to showcase the King’s later years. There are awesome costumes that come from his days as a Jailbird. Or put on some blue suede shows and move those hips!

Friday, September 24th, 2010Avatar is probably the most popular movie of the year. Every year there are some costumes that stand out in the minds of costume aficionados. Usually these costumes are of characters from a movie or television show that had a particular following that year. Last year was a sort of exception to this rule, as Michael Jackson became the must have costume. The glove and various other accessories flew off the shelves. The King of Pop is still a hot item this year, but Avatar is stacking up to be the top costume for the year. The Neytiri costume is an excellent choice for girls and women and the Jake Sulley costume is perfect for boys and men. The characters in the film are easy to fall in love with and to get into these costumes for the night will bring you that much closer to being these newly iconic creatures.
The world in which Avatar takes place is interconnected and everyone lives in complete balance and harmony. Contribute to this beautiful Utopian ideal by wearing the skin of the peace loving aliens. Man may have been super mean to them, but you can propagate their views in costume! Although I usually have a distaste for films with such an obvious political sub text, this one impressed me and if you don’t appreciate for the story and writing you must at least give credit to the visual effects in the film. Talk about the perfect excuse for buying one of those new 3d tvs!
Haunted House Props and Halloween Decorations

You want you house to look creepy and haunted, you’ll need to do more than let the dust gather for the rest of the month. Haunted house props and Halloween decorations are a must have for anyone attempting to look festive this season. From jugs of fake blood to giant prop spiders and bugs there are plenty of items to scare the local kiddies. Or impress the neighbors with your outward showing of seasonal consumerism. Who wouldn’t be jealous of the sweetest haunted house in the neighborhood? I know that every year there are more than a few houses in my area that compete for best decorations. Sadly, I’ve never won. I have supplied a good deal of winning displays though! With professional quality haunted house supplies, your house will look good enough to actually deter people from going to it…Well, maybe not that scary, but pretty creepy.
The big thing to add lately are the afore mentioned hunted house props. They’re just downright weird. The giant bugs, body organs and fake corpses get grosser and more realistic every year. This year is no exception. My mom won’t even look through the costume catalogs anymore. She says it makes her sick! That’s a good sign that the decorations available are truly top notch. Who doesn’t want to have a house dressed up to make people vomit? At least on Halloween, I think this is a good thing!

Wigs are also good for use in groups where consistency in style is important. If you nedd everyone’s hair to look identical you’ll spend a fortune on stylists…why not just put everyone into a wig? Costume wigs are fun items that you’ll get some use out of. Especially if you have little kids. They love to play dress up. Let your little darling look fabulous in a feather boa and matching wig. Very fun for tea parties and any time your little one wants to live in that special childhood fantasy land. Don’t throw away old costume items when you can get use from them for years to come. Many people only wear their wigs once for Halloween and then they are thrown away. So sad considering the great number of uses that can come of old costume items. Maybe you’ll wake up bald one morning…that bright purple wig in the closet will probably be better than no hair at all! Emergency hair to the rescue!
